- Letter from Zora Neale Hurston to Countee Cullen
Having just read The Scarlet Letter, we can recognize Hester as a hero who has "the nerve to walk [her] own way." How does she "search for reality" as opposed to boarding "the rattling wagon of wishful illusions"?

1 Read the assigned excerpt and discuss it with your group. What questions does it raise? What big ideas does it address? Does it connect to any of the readings we did prior to vacation? Use the "Question Starts" routine.
2 Report your questions/big ideas to the class.
3 Read the first two paragraphs of Their Eyes Were Watching God. Think back to our “First pages” activity. What are some things that are established, introduced, implied, etc. in these two paragraphs?
4 Begin novel
